Overfishing (Ricky Plasencia)

Over time fish populations have decreased significantly due to overfishing. Overfishing is simply as it sounds. Overfishing is when the quantity of fish is cultivated at a rate where fishes are not given enough time to replenish. These methods of fishing are unsustainable for oceans because it exceeds the capacity of fishing. Fishing fleets are catching fishes two to three times more than what oceans can sustainably support. As a result of this, many fishes are now labeled as endangered species. This includes many forms of salmons and tunas. The issue of overfishing is not only impacting creatures that humans consume. Many dolphins and seals are becoming endangered.
One way of solving this issue is to clearly slow down on the fishing. Fishes are caught at an alarming rate on a daily basis. In all reality, all of humanity will not eat the amounts of fish that are caught. This means that we can apply the brakes a little when it comes to fishing. We are slowly reaching the point where all of our previous actions can’t be reversed, but we are not there yet. The effects of overfishing are still reversible but humanity must act fast if wants to reach a level of sustainability for fishes. Fishermen must learn to safely catch fishes without reaching the point where its harmful. This can be achieved but people must first become consciously aware of the situation. The change can be made, it just takes a great amount of effort to achieve it.

  1. Hi Rickey,
I totally agreed with you. People need to slow down on the fishing, that's the only way we can solve this problem. People are catching more fishes then they needed. People need to understand that fish can't just grow in a day, so have to slow down on fishing.

  2. I think overfishing is such an interesting, however, unfortunate topic. It amazes me the amount of fish that are brought to land each day and the fact that we are taking much more than we need is very selfish. Seeing as the fish population is not able to replenish fast enough, this is a topic that should really be focused on to solve so it does not continue to grow.

  3. Overfishing is a big problem, not only because the number of fish that is decreasing, but also other marine species are killed. This activity causes a disturbance on all marine life and worse, cause the increase of endangered species. People need to be more conscious about this problem and start to decrease the overfishing.

  4. Even though I personally like to eat fish and seafood, I agree we definitely have to step on the brakes on a little bit with the fishing. What is interesting is that we are fishing to a point where we won't even eat all of the fish. If fisherman know this, then why do they still do it? It certainly cannot be because people would be buying fish, because they are not eating them.

  5. This was an interesting read. It reminds me of the video "end of the line" even though some people depend on fishing for money our future depends on us protecting the ocean and maintaining a sustainable environment

  6. This article relates directly to our class, when we watched the "End of the Line" video clip. In the video we learned that fish was a main source of income for many people. However, you have mentioned that we don't even use all of the fish we catch for food. In the "End of the Line" video we learned that hi-tech vessels can arch with world catch 4 times over. But like you said, what's the point if we aren't using it for food? Is it just for recreation? This issue needs to be solved, and people need to slow down on fishing.
